Quilting is my therapy. Hiking is my therapy. Yoga is my therapy. Riding my horse is my therapy. <blank> is my therapy. What each of these statements represents is an acknowledgement of something that brings joy and fulfillment to our lives. An activity that refreshes and energizes us. They are the activities that nurture our whole selves. The month of June, often heralding summer and, for some, increased leisure activities, is a terrific time to reevaluate what brings joy and fulfillment to our lives and to do more of it!

Self-care is a trending concept and a part of our lives that could easily be neglected or put low on the priority list. Expressions of self-care through our activities – enjoyed alone or with others – are essential for recharging and fostering balance in our lives. Taking the time to provide this nurturing to your Self will yield improved mental health, help maintain physical health, inspire creativity, enhance relationships with others, and add joy to your days.

After writing this post, I learned that someone close to me had unexpected surgery and would be unable to engage in their preferred self-care activities. Specifically, while recuperating they would not be able to take long walks or practice yoga, both of which have been described as their “therapy”. This gave me pause to consider the value of having multiple activities – passive and active – to draw upon should life throw us curve balls. Which it will.

Replenishing energy and mental focus through engaging in enjoyable activities is what I encourage you to reach for this month. Find your “therapy” across multiple activities and bask in the restorative properties of this self-care. Make time for yourself and prioritize your wellness!
